The U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol has introduced a new Physical Assurance Programme in partnership with Oritain to scientifically verify the origin of U.S. cotton and strengthen supply chain transparency.

The initiative follows a successful pilot project and incorporates forensic isotopic analysis to validate claims that cotton products are sourced from the United States. The programme is designed to complement the Trust Protocol’s existing digital traceability platform by adding a layer of physical verification.

Beginning in May 2026, selected supplier members will be asked to provide representative yarn or fabric samples for independent testing. Oritain will analyze the samples and verify their claimed origin using forensic science and proprietary data modeling.

According to the Trust Protocol, the programme aims to enhance supply chain integrity, improve transparency and provide data-backed evidence to support origin claims made by members.

“Assurance is a key element of the Trust Protocol, and this programme is intended to introduce an additional layer of confidence for our members and their customers,” said Gary Adams, President of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol.

Gemma Lynch, Chief Customer Officer at Oritain, said forensic verification helps address a critical gap in traceability systems by validating origin claims at the product level and providing independent scientific proof of source materials.

The new programme is expected to strengthen trust across the cotton value chain, from mills and manufacturers to brands and retailers.
