Odisha Approves US $13 Million Yarn Unit to Advance Cotton-to-Yarn Integration

The Odisha government has approved an investment of Rs 124 crore (US$13.17 million) to set up a yarn manufacturing unit in Balangir district. The project will be developed by Shree Ambica Cotspin Pvt Ltd, a 27-year-old textile firm.

Experts noted that the new unit will help bridge this gap by enabling forward integration from cotton ginning to yarn production within the stateDespite consistent growth in cotton cultivation across several districts, a significant portion of raw cotton has traditionally been sent outside Odisha due to the lack of downstream processing infrastructure. 

“The project could become a key link in Odisha’s farm-to-fabric strategy by ensuring that greater value generated from locally grown cotton remains within the state economy,” said Anu Garg, Chief Secretary.

Odisha’s textile sector is witnessing a strong investment wave, with major players investing across key districts. For instance, the Epic Group in Khurda, has invested Rs. 220 crore (US $23.37 million) to set up a sustainable manufacturing facility, while MAS Holdings in Bhuinpur is investing US $140 million to establish operations in the state.  

Similarly Hindalco Industries has announced a Rs. 100 crore (US $10.62 million) unit in Keonjhar, adding to the industrial base. Sonaselection India Ltd in Khurda is investing  Rs. 130 crore (US $13.81 million) in a garment manufacturing unit, alongside Khordha Alphatex Pvt Ltd’s Rs. 180 crore (US $19.12 million) technical textile facility.

Along with these, more than 33 textile and apparel companies including Page Industries, KPR Mills, TechnoSport, First Step Baby Wear, Sportking, Adarsh Knitwear, Anubhav Apparels, Trimetro Garments India Pvt Ltd have committed investment in the eastern state.
