Teijin Frontier has developed an innovative polyester filament yarn that delivers enhanced stretchability and functionality, addressing growing demand for comfort in sportswear, outdoor apparel and everyday clothing.

As consumers increasingly seek comfort and performance, polyurethane-based elastic fibres have been widely used for their stretchability. However, differences in material properties, particularly heat-setting characteristics between polyurethane fibres and polyester materials have posed challenges for product development.

To overcome this, Teijin Frontier has engineered a new polyester yarn that combines soft stretchability with high recoverability, while remaining fully compatible with high-performance polyester materials. Unlike conventional stretch yarns that rely on structural crimping, the new yarn derives its elasticity from advanced polymer design and spinning control technology, offering excellent shape stability comparable to polyurethane-based fibres.

The new yarn also supports advanced textile functionality, including moisture absorption, quick-drying properties and durable water repellency. Its compatibility with polyester enables the development of 100 per cent polyester textiles, enhancing design flexibility due to strong heat-setting properties.

Additionally, the all-polyester composition simplifies recycling, contributing to improved sustainability in textile manufacturing.

Teijin Frontier plans to deploy the new yarn across a wide range of apparel applications, including sportswear, casual wear and innerwear. Commercialisation is set for 2027 in both domestic and international outdoor and sports apparel markets, with a target of 100,000 metres in sales for fiscal 2027, scaling up to 500,000 metres by fiscal 2029.
